People of faith have been supporting Habitat since our founding more than 40 years ago. We share a prophetic call to serve those in need of safe, equitable affordable housing. We would not have been able to serve the more than 1,000 families with new homes or supported 700 additional families with repairs, without your support! If you attended our February 21st dedication at Old Poole Place, you heard me say that this is a holy time. This spring, I have been reminded that our various religious ancestors understood that we need regular practices of prayer, fasting, charity and loving each other; to be the people, the community, and the world, God intends us to be.

At Habitat Wake, we hold a longstanding tradition of gifting quilts or afghans to homebuyers when they close on their homes. These pieces are made by community partners, often members of our faith network, and each one carries a patchwork of care, intention and prayer.

The following is a speech from Habitat Wake founder Rick Beech, delivered to the Apex Town Council on February 10, 2026

I have lived in Apex since 1998. I love living at the “Peak of Good Living”. I was fortunate to move here when families with modest incomes, including many public servants, could afford to live here. I passionately speak tonight with the hope that Apex could again be a place where public servants can live and serve. I plead for the Town’s help so that the dream of serving and living in Apex does not stop with my generation.

April 24, 2025, may very well be the day the Yes in God’s Back Yard movement took hold in our community. After years of discernment and planning, Greenwood Forest Baptist Church received official approval from the Cary Town Council to rezone their underutilized property for their pioneering Carr Center project, making way for 62 units of affordable housing on their campus.

This year Habitat Wake turns 40. In 1985, while serving as a seminary intern at Millbrook Baptist Church in Raleigh, the pastor gave me the freedom to help form a local Habitat organization as the focus of my internship.

God was already at work. Various groups were gathering to pursue a housing ministry, including a group in Wake Forest and Franklin County that was pursuing the Habitat model.
