The following story was shared by Kanesha Hunt at Ekklesia Church on Sunday, May 31, 2026
Good morning everyone, I am truly excited and grateful to be here today to speak about the goodness of Habitat for Humanity and the impact it has had on my life and the lives of so many families.
Like many hardworking people, I realized that working hard alone is sometimes just not enough in today’s economy. Rent continues to rise, and even with good credit, making three times the monthly rent felt impossible to reach. I began to feel discouraged and defeated. As a mother, all I could think about was giving my children stability a safe place to call home. I remember praying constantly and asking God to make a way for me and my children. I prayed for an affordable home and for hope during a season where I felt like I was running out of options.
One day, on impulse, I applied to Habitat for Humanity. I honestly did not know what the outcome would be, but I knew it was my last option. When I received that approval email, I cannot even describe the feeling. That was the beginning of a life changing journey.
This program has given me more than the opportunity to eventually own an affordable home. It has given me hope. It has reminded me that community still exists and that people still care about one another.
Working on the construction site has been an amazing experience. I’ve learned valuable skills, but more importantly, I’ve built friendships and connections with people who genuinely want to help each other succeed.
Habitat is not just building houses Habitat is building community. Every nail hammered, every wall raised, and every hour volunteered represents love, sacrifice, and people coming together to lift one another up. What I’m helping build may not be my home, but I know it will become a place of safety and stability for another hardworking family. That means something to me.
Now whenever I’m at Lowe’s or shopping at the ReStore, I always round up my purchase because I know it goes toward building stronger communities and helping families stay out of homelessness.
I’m also incredibly grateful for this church and your willingness to support Habitat’s mission. Your generosity and service are making a real difference in people’s lives. This is what community is all about helping one another, standing together, and creating healthier communities where families can grow and thrive. And I truly believe that when people work hard for something, they value it deeply. I know my future neighbors worked hard to earn their homes just like I am, and together we will continue building not just houses, but a strong and caring community.
Thank you all so much for allowing me to share my story, and thank you for being part of something that is changing lives every single day.
